here’s a sneak preview of one of the pieces I have in TEASE, one of the three shows I’m in during Festival X.

This body of work is an exceptional, juried exhibition of SPAO alumni and instructors, offering a range of perspectives which bravely explore sexuality and provocation with concealment and exposure.

It opens tomorrow night at Patrick Gordon Framing, 160 Elm street. see you there! :)

If the Facebook event is any indication, the show at Patrick Gordon Framing entitled T E A S E  is going to be a huge hit.

A juried photo exhibition featuring current students, alumni, and instructors at the School of the Photographic Arts: Ottawa, this exhibition “will bravely explore sexuality and provocation nuanced with expressions of concealment and exposure.”

Featuring some of the best of Ottawa’s photography community, the vernissage for this show on the 21st of September will also be the launch for Guerilla Magazine #33.

This show will be open from the 20th to the 30th of September, Monday - Wednesday, 9:30am to 5pm, Thursday - Friday 9:30am to 7pm, Saturday 11am to 4pm.

See you there!!

Collaboration is key to artistic creation, and photography is no exception. One of the most exciting collaborations of this year’s Festival X is the collaboration occuring between SPAO, Festival X, and the Canada Dance Festival. Seven alumni of the School of Photographic Arts: Ottawa (SPAO) have each been asked to photograph one of the seven groups participating in this year’s Canada Dance Festival.
These images will be printed during a mini residency at SPAO over the summer, framed by Patrick Gordon Framing, and displayed at the National Arts Centre during Festival X in September. The artists participating cover an extremely wide range of photographic practice, from glass plate photography (Whitney Lewis-Smith, whose work is shown in a screenshot above) to editorial work (Jamie Kronick); from portraiture (Sarai Strikefoot). This is sure to be an exceptional group of work!

Very excited to announce that I’m going to be tumblr-blogging for Festival X 2012 this September. Check out my first post, which appropriately enough describes SPAO’s collaboration with the Canada Dance Festival. Excited to be a part of this team!

We are excited to announce a solo show by Olivia Johnston opening at the Alliance Française of Ottawa on May 2nd. The show is called Latitude and will be an exploration of landscape and travel photography.  In her artist statement Olivia writes.

Often, I am unable to fully process and understand my emotions at the time I am experiencing them. My camera often seems to understand me better than I understand myself – it effectively represents how I feel in that moment faster than I can process it, and therefore is more successful at representing my state of mind than I am. These landscapes are an effective means of representing the broad scope of human emotion. Each image says much more about my experiences and interpretation of the world than words ever could.

Her vernissage for Latitude is Wednesday, May 2, between 6 - 8 pm, and the show will be open until May 30th! Hope you can make it out.

A little plug from the SPAO blog about my show, coming up fast! Hope you can make it out to the opening, this Wednesday!

Last night was the graduation and awards ceremony at SPAO. I was very excited to learn that I won two prizes: the Silver Prize for outstanding achievement using film for production, sponsored by GPC Labworks, and the Award of Visual Merit for portfolio and exhibition in level 3, sponsored by Wallacks.

I am so grateful to both of these businesses & their staff for honouring me with these awards and for supporting emerging art & artists in Ottawa. Thank you!!

Just a quick reminder that the opening for my solo show Latitude is this coming Wednesday, May 2, between 6 and 8. I would love to see everyone there!
